BURSCOUGH boss Derek Goulding will have been delighted with his team’s performance on Saturday as the Greens comfortably swept aside Salford City at Victoria Park.
Goals from Liam Caddick and Niall Cummins either side of a penalty save by Linnets keeper Tim Horn earned Burscough their first league win of the season.
The hosts were in the lead after six minutes when the Salford keeper spilled an awkward long range shot by Niall Cummins, leaving Liam Caddick to slot the loose ball into the bottom corner.
Moments later the home side had the chance to double their lead after Caddick was felled on the edge of the box but Darren Brookfield's free-kick was headed just wide by Liam Dodd.
Still at 1-0, Burscough were very much in control.
It looked like that could change however on the 40 minute mark when Nelson Jorge Mota attempted a cross which appeared to hit the hand of a Burscough defender.
Aston stepped up to take the resulting spot kick but Horn dived to his left and his save kept Burscough 1-0 up at half time.
The second half began with Burscough seizing control once again. The Linnets had two quick chances through Cummins and Caddick but the Salford keeper was equal to their efforts.
In the 66th minute another Burscough attack earned the Greens a penalty of their own when the ball struck the Salford left-back's hand.
Cummins stepped up to the spot and finished emphatically into the top corner to double the Linnets' advantage.
Salford produced some good late efforts late on but they weren't enough to beat Tim Horn as he earned his third clean sheet of the season and the Linnets are now unbeaten in over a month.
Burscough are next in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Kendal Town, before going back to Cumbria again next Saturday when they take on Conference North side Workington in the FA Cup.
