ORMSKIRK entertained Marple this weekend at a windswept Ormskirk School and came away with a convincing 9-try victory.
Kirk opened the scoring as early as the third minute when the visitors couldn’t stop a rampaging Ryan Purcell who bulldozed over the line leaving a trail of defenders in his wake.
Alex Lambie slotted the simple conversion. With the elements in their favour, Marple got themselves on the scoreboard through two penalties as Ormskirk fell foul of the referee’s whistle on numerous occasions. Kirk extended their lead through a try from winger Joe Hodson who showed his opposite number and Marple’s full-back a clean pair of heels to score under the posts, Lambie again converted.
Glyn Roberts scored Ormskirk’s next try as they looked to kill the game off, the veteran back-rower applying the finishing touch to another flowing move.
Marple didn’t give up though and after adding another penalty they benefited from the ball hitting the corner flag and bouncing behind Kirk’s try line, their winger pouncing to touch down, a try which was skilfully converted from the touchline. This proved to be Marple’s final score of the afternoon and Kirk finished the half with two more tries, Mark Webster’s strong break and offload gave Matt Tickle the chance to score his second try of the season from 40 yards out and then Webster scored himself, crashing on to Gaz Prytherch’s short pass to score in the corner.
With the weather worsening the second half was a scrappy affair with handling becoming increasingly difficult for both sides.
Despite the elements, Ormskirk did manage to add four further tries.
The first came through Dan Hitchlock, the number 8 picking up from the back of the scrum and barging his way over the line.
Next to score was Ben McCarthy, who continued his recent rich vein of form as he sprinted in for his 10th try in five games.
Chris Bartolo, on his return from University, added the next try, the winger finishing off after some good work from centre Neil Habberfield.
Ormskirk’s final try of the afternoon came from Hodson who got his second try of the match after McCarthy broke through from deep inside his own half.
All four second half tries were converted by Lambie.
