FOOTBALLERS in Skelmersdale are being urged to sign up to their local 6-a-side league as they look for a cheap, fun, but scientifically proven way to get fit in 2014.
Leisure Leagues - Europe’s largest provider of 5 and 6 a side football – have a league at Glenburn Sports Centre on Monday and there are spaces to join right now!
The league gives players the chance to work off those post-Christmas pounds for around £3 each a week as well as being given the chance to compete for a host of top prizes.
Leisure Leagues Executive Manager Chris Rowntree said he was excited to see the league kick off: “We are very proud to operate leagues in Skelmersdale and extremely appreciative of the support we get,” he said.
According to Chris, although the league is designed to be competitive, it is designed to be fun for the whole community – and is open to everyone, both male and female, over 16 – and there are added health benefits too.
A study conducted at Copenhagen University showed that a game of small sided football was more beneficial for competitors than a session in the gym, and with the dawn of 2014, now is the perfect time to join.
It was found that two groups of men performed equally well on a variety of fitness tests, even though one group had been training in the gym while the other had been doing battle on the five-a-side pitch.
The footballers showed that they had been at 90 per cent of their maximum heart rate for longer than their gym-going counterparts, and had also lowered their blood pressure more significantly.
Chris said that the findings were great news for players in the leagues and added: “We look forward to seeing everyone who wants to maintain their New Year’s resolutions!”
The league is fully affiliated and will see qualified referees, with all equipment provided.
