A MAN who can lay claim to having once defeated the great Tiger Woods is the special guest at Ormskirk Golf Club on Friday.
Gary Wolstenholme is to take part in a fundraising golf day in aid of the West Lancashire branch of the British Heart Foundation.
Wolstenholme, twice a British Amateur champion in 1991 and 2003 and the leading points scorer for the Great Britain and Ireland team in the history of the Walker Cup, will be part of around 18 teams of four taking part in the event.
Wolstenholme defeated Woods in the 1995 Walker Cup, just two years before the American won his first Masters title at Augusta.
But Surrey-born Wolstenholme, 48, remained strictly an amateur player, only deciding to turn professional last September.
West Lancashire BHF branch committee member and one of the day's organisers, Ian Gregson, said: "We are all looking forward to the event and it's great to have Gary playing at Ormskirk Golf Club.
"Unfortunately, last year's event was rained off so we're all hoping the weather will be kinder to us this time around. As well as Gary, among those taking part are well-known West Lancashire couple John Stanley and his wife, Gail."
