SKEM have the wind in their sails again after a tough match in blustery conditions was settled by a single first half goal at Vella Park.
With the wind blowing hard across the pitch, it was difficult for both sets of players to play creative, flowing football, but Skem settled down the quickest and soon looked the better of the two sides going forward, enjoying the most of the possession early on.
On ten minutes, Skem’s persistence paid off when a shot stopped by the keeper dropped to the feet of Mayumi Gillam who reacted the quickest to coolly tuck the ball past the goalie to put the home side deserveably ahead.
Skem kept up the pressure on Wigan with every attack but were unable to add to their score line, although looking the most confident with their 1.0 advantage going into the break.
With Skem playing against the increasingly strong winds in the second period, the home side expected Wigan to rain shots in at them, but solid defending and great counter attacks by the forwards so nearly paid off for Skem, who went so close to scoring a second on several occasions with great attacking play.
With the team totally focussed as a unit, Skem kept their shape and composure right up to the final whistle to take a valuable three points at home.
