ORMSKIRK West End Rangers clinched the Wilf Jenkinson Cup with a dramatic extra time victory over Formby Junior Sports Club ‘B’ at The Rookery on Sunday.
Tom Biglands was Ormskirk’s cup final hero netting the silverware-clinching goal.
The game between these two under-10s teams began at an unbelievable pace with both sides attacking in numbers and creating chance after chance.
The first real opportunity fell to Biglands when he got on the end of a long Jamie Barnes throw but could only flick his effort just past the post.
Formby then created a clear chance of their own.
Luke Highton played in Eiji Scahill but with his dashing green boots he couldn’t force Rangers keeper Aiden Darcy into action.
Scahill then turned provider and played in teammate Elliot Stych. This time Darcy made a confident save as the game remained goalless.
Rangers then carved open the Formby defence with Will Jones playing a magnificent pass to Thomas King, only for his effort to be expertly tipped around the post by Formby keeper Dylan Howard.
The half time whistle blew with nothing between the sides
Five minutes into the second half Scahill played a neat one-two with Stych but again saw his shot tipped away to safety.
Rangers’ midfielder James Kay then hit a shot from outside the area which crashed against the crossbar.
It was now Rangers who looked most likely to find the net when a swift move began with Jones playing the ball out wide to King who crossed perfectly for Kay who blazed over the bar from close range.
Then with little over five minutes remaining Ormskirk took the lead.
Stych latched onto an error by Matthew Coughlan, ran clear and slotted the ball home for what appeared to be the winning goal.
But then, deep into stoppage time with almost the last kick of the game Formby forced the game into extra time.
Chris Rimmer saw his effort blocked and in the ensuing scramble Stych stabbed the ball into the net with his left foot.
And as soon as extra time began, Ormskirk had regained their lead in this great match.
A Biglands corner was curled in from the right, and it sailed past everyone and dropped inside the far post, much to the delight of manager Kevin Wong.
Dominant in midfield, Kay drove forward and nearly added a third for his side only to see his shot fly past the post.
In the second half of the added period Formby showed more intent in trying to force the game into penalties with the highly impressive Scahill seeing two shots crash back off the crossbar.
Then with barely any time remaining Stych saw his shot saved expertly by Darcy to snuff out Formby’s final chance and ensure the trophy went to the West Lancashire team.
