ORMSKIRK SCHOOL’S Year 9 boys’ football team have had a fantastic year completing a West Lancashire Schools District league and cup double and adding the Lancashire Cup for the treble.
The boys are used to having success in the district as they have won the league in each of the last three seasons, but the Lancashire Cup had always eluded them. The team travelled to Squires Gate FC Blackpool to play Morecambe High School in the final.
The game started well with both sides having chances, though the nerves were showing in some of the clearances.
Ormskirk made the breakthrough 20 minutes into the first half when some excellent interplay between Dan Brady and Tom Bradley set up a chance that Aidan Darcy took wonderfully well.
The expected 10 minute onslaught from Morecambe came immediately after half time but the Ormskirk defence coped with it calmly.
Then midway through the half pressure from the Ormskirk midfield forced a mistake from a Morecambe defender and top scorer Jack Owen finished with his left foot.
With the game coming to a conclusion substitute Matt Carrigan scored with his first touch to give Ormskirk a well-deserved 3-0 victory and the title of county champions.
