Erin & Lucy Staunton-Turner, Ormskirk School
ERIN and Lucy Staunton-Turner from Ormskirk School have managed to achieve something most people could only dream of.
Not only have they just been selected to play for England’s under-15 cricket team, they have now made it through to the final selection stages of the ‘English Schools U15 Girls’ football squad!
After attending a cricket training and development day, which included playing a 50 over match at Loughborough University early this term the girls were named in a 22 strong England Women’s Development Programme (EWDP). The girls have done brilliantly, especially considering they are still only 13-years-old and were competing against girls in the year above.
Their selection will see them based at the National Cricket Performance Centre under taking player-specific programmes delivered by high quality coaches and sports science and medicine specialists.
They will take part in a several winter training camps and an intense training programme.
Erin is a left-arm medium pace bowler and middle order batter while Lucy is a right-arm off-spin bowler and top order batter.
Jenny Laycock, Lancashire Cricket Board's Women and Girls' Cricket Development Officer, said: “The pair have had a brilliant season for Lancashire U13 County Cricket team and their achievement is well deserved.”
The girls were selected to attend the first stages of the England football trials at Lilleshall Hall a few weeks ago.
“They were successful and now face the final selection progress on Sunday November 10, which involves the best of the North playing against the best of the South, from the 50 girls involved a squad will then be selected.
Their Lancashire Manager Mike Nadal, said: “They deserved their place in the final trial against some very strong competition from across the COE’s in the North and wishes them the best of luck from the whole of LSFA.”
The pair are not only talented cricketers and footballers but they also train with Liverpool Pembroke Sefton Harriers when time allows. Lucy competed in the Javelin at the English Schools Championships this summer finishing eighth nationally with a massive throw of 31.68m and Erin is a fantastic 800m runner with a PB of 2.35.
Laura Goff, PE teacher, said: “Ormskirk School are extremely proud of this talented pair.
“It is an incredible achievement and one that has come about through hard work, dedication and talent.
“They have a promising future of sport ahead of them and we wish them both every success.’’
