SKELMERSDALE UNITED'S youth sides were unable to book places in the latter stages of cup competitions, due to the pitch at the West Lancashire College Stadium being unplayable, and Penlake also contacting under-17s manager Dom Finnigan early on Saturday morning to say their pitch was also unplayable.
With the possibility of games being off, United's youngsters have upped their training sessions after Christmas, with both the Under 18s and Under 17s training together on Wednesday and Friday nights at JMO Sports Park.
All players are in vibrant spirit after being told of the plan to take both teams over to Spain in pre-season to do some fitness work and play two games against good quality academy opposition.
Both youth teams have been doing really well of late, the Under 18s are currently fourth in the North West Youth Alliance, but with games in hand can put themselves in a great position for second place. The Under 17s are also doing well currently in second place with a game in hand on first place Penlake and in two quarter finals.
United's youth team are very proud to announce that after progressing through the youth setup and into the first team at Skem, Jack Hont has gone out to gain some experience at Salford City, and Danny Flood and Jordan Slater to Cammell Laird.
From the youth team’s point of view this is great to see younger players getting a chance at such a good level of semi-professional football. Tommy Lawson has long been known for giving youth a chance, especially with the likes of Craig Noone who made his debut in the Skelmersdale United first team at the age of 16 and is now plying his trade at Cardiff City, also George Donnelly, now at Rochdale.
In the last few years there haven't been as many young Skelmersdale based players in the first team as there are now, with Kenny Strickland, Alan Burton, Lewis Field, Peter Wylie and Michael Simpson all from the area.
Next up for the Under 17's is Bickerstaffe at Glenburn Sports College next Sunday (2pm kick off). The Under-18s are also at home to Ashton Athletic which is also a 2pm kick off at the West Lancashire College Stadium, the bar will be open and food available.
The Under 18s and 17s are on the lookout for experienced players. Call Paul Nicholson on 07900637898 or Dom Finnigan on 07972927825.
