Too many errors as Ormskirk lose 27-9 at Wirral

Wirral...27

Ormskirk...9

ORMSKIRK should have really come away with two points after some excellent play in the first half against their hosts Wirral.

Kirk’s defence was outstanding and the back row turned over plenty of ball, while Matt Johnson made some strong runs and there were a few bone-crunching tackles made all over the park.

Wirral gave away far too many penalties and John Armstrong was accurate with his kicking, enabling Ormskirk to go into half-time looking strong with a 9-0 lead.

But five minutes into the second half, disaster struck. Basic errors by the Kirk back three led to two sloppy tries and Wirral were back in the game with the scores now at 12-9.

During the following 30 minutes, Kirk were simply out-played and out-classed by Wirral.

They were a well-organised team and used the strong wind to their advantage, with another well-worked try giving them a 19-9 lead.

Ormskirk, to their credit, refused to lie down and they took the game into Wirral’s 22, but their defence stood strong.

From 30 metres out, they scored a drop goal and a late try made the final score 27-9. Man-of-the-match went to Andy Wilson.

Kirk need to play the full 80 minutes and cut out the basic errors. On the positive side, their first half performance proved they can compete in this league and turn over a few teams.

This Saturday, Ormskirk welcome Wigan to Green Lane, kick-off at 3pm. There have been some very good battles between these sides over the years and Wigan will be eager to get the first win after three losses in the league.

For Kirk, they need to stick to the game plan and be more patient – not rushing and therefore succumbing to errors.

Meanwhile, the second team recorded a good 32-12 victory at home to Warrington.

Tries from Bowling, Dawson, Keech, Skett and the Montrose. Whalley kicked one penalty and two conversions.

Elsewhere, Ormskirk’s third team lost at home against combined Hutton first and second team 25-3. Alex Lambie kicking the only points.

The fourth team travelled to Vale of Lune and got beat 39-7, with Justin Lyon scoring the only try goaled by veteran Russ Brennan, who was ‘guesting’ in a rare appearance.
