ORMSKIRK RUFC first team begin their league season at Orrell, who were relegated at the end of last season, this Saturday.
The sides last met two seasons ago when both teams were in the league above, and with both clubs seeing a change in personnel since it will be an interesting first test for two teams that will see themselves as being amongst the better outfits in the division.
The Gingerbread Men come into the season on the back of finishing last season in great form, winning their last five games and starting to play the kind of entertaining rugby that coach Donny Sutherland drills into them.
Two morale boosting pre-season victories over Old Bedians and last season's champions Sefton also bode well for this year. A disappointing loss to a much-improved Liverpool Collegiate in the Lancs Plate on Saturday may have taken the shine off preparations for the new season slightly but confidence is still high as the league campaign begins.
Captain Gareth Prytherch said: “The lads are really looking forward to this season, after the way we finished last year our goal is definitely gaining one of the two promotion spots and we're all confident.
“Pre-season has gone really well and in our two warm-up matches we've given senior debuts to eight teenagers who have come through the MJS section of the club, they've all impressed straight away and will provide a huge boost to the senior section as a whole. Everybody is enjoying their rugby here at the moment and we're raring to go.”
Kick-off on Saturday is 3pm and the following week Ormskirk welcome Moore to Green Lane for their first home league game of the season.
