ORMSKIRK Under 13s continue their unbeaten run this season with a 20-10 victory over Heaton Moor in the first round of the Blacksticks Blue Junior Challenge.
Conditions were perfect as the Blacksticks Blue Junior Challenge got underway. Ormskirk piled on early pressure, dominating the scrum and using their powerful forwards to good effect. Quick hands saw the ball move wide to the fullback who scored their first try in the corner.
Ormskirk’s second came soon after. Heaton Moor’s stoic defence managed to kick clear of their 22 into the waiting fullback’s hands who, once again, ran in to score. Heaton Moor got one back before half-time. Opting to run a penalty, Ormskirk’s defence was caught napping and Moor’s powerful number eight scored in the corner.
The second half saw Ormskirk turn the heat up again and the Moor defence couldn’t withstand the pressure. Ormskirk powered through to make their third try. The fourth came soon after. Unrelenting pressure saw Ormskirk “score” down the wing only to be brought back for a foot in touch, followed by a powerful forwards drive that was held up. The score finally came from the scrum half darting through from the back of the ensuing scrum.
Moor had the last word though, their persistence paying off when quick hands passed the ball across the pitch to the waiting number eight who powered in for his and Moor’s second.
Final score: Ormskirk 20 – Heaton Moor 10. All the boys forgot their kicking boots and none of the extras were scored.
A great game of rugby. Heaton Moor’s “development” squad displayed great potential and deserved the bonus losing point. Ormskirk U13s take their tally of unbeaten matches this season to four. To join a winning team contact the club via the website www.pitchero.com /clubs/ormskirkrufc
