ORMSKIRK U13s took their unbeaten record this season to five games with a nail biting 24-14 win over Sedgley Tigers.
Alex G kicked off and led the charge with the early play taking place in the Tigers’ territory.
Tom put Ormskirk five points to the good with a breakaway try from the back of a scrum.
Sedgley came straight back though and went ahead with a converted try.
Continued pressure put Ormskirk ahead as they stayed deep in their half and earned a penalty.
Once again Tom G carried it in and grounded it near the corner to give Ormskirk a 7-10 lead.
Alex G stepped up to earn the extras from a tricky angle and end the run of missed kicks. 7-12.
The pressure continued for the remainder of the half. Andrew H on a fantastic support run, ran into score, only to be brought back having received a forward pass. Right on the death of half time, Tom G’s hat-trick was narrowly saved by the Sedgley defence holding him up.
The second half started the same way as the first ended. The Sedgley kick was short giving Ormskirk a scrum at halfway.
Quick hands saw the pass come to James S who sprinted into the corner to score Ormskirk's third try. Tom G tried for the extras but failed to capitalize and the score remained 7-17.
The tide began to turn as Sedgley’s forwards turned the screw and came up good with their second try shutting out the daylight and bringing the score to a nervy 14-17.
There followed a very tense 10 minute period as the Sedgley pressure was immense.
Ormskirk were firmly entrenched deep in their own half as the Sedgely tide ebbed and flowed at the Ormskirk sea-wall.
The wall held firm as the Ormskirk defence was awesome and perhaps the most impressive part of their play.
Matty W led by example and the forwards stemmed the Sedgley tide with the backs playing their part.
As the Ormskirk supporters’ fingernails disappeared, the Sedgley pressure burst and Ormskirk broke away and started applying pressure of their own.
Runs from Joe C, Andy M, Cameron E and Alex G soon had them within striking distance. It was then Sedgley’s turn to defend, twice Sedgley kicked free and twice Marcus L, in his role at fullback, brought it back.
Finally with the very last play of the match Cameron E took the ball from the scrum and ran in to score with Joe D kicking the extras taking the final score to 14-24.
