Dannielle Houghton - Ormskirk Ladies
ORMSKIRK LADIES produced a barn-storming performance to take pole position in North Challenge One with a scintillating display of attacking rugby in this exciting derby at Southport RUFC.
Southport’s sandy pitches have held up remarkably well, given the prevailing weather conditions, and both squads were delighted that the game was to go ahead. The score line did not reflect the effort and commitment shown by the home side and the encounter was played in an excellent spirit throughout by these two great teams, but in truth the home side had no real answer to Ormskirk’s power and pace.
Although Ormskirk Ladies were missing the experience and leadership of Lou Prescott in the forwards and the established centre partnership of Lou Robinson and Becks Harrison in the all-important centre roles, this merely gave Ormskirk the opportunity to showcase the talents of some of their up and coming starlets.
Phil Cadman said: “The squad are developing nicely. We now have a number of players who can play in a variety of positions. Jenny Leitch and Meghan Montgomery give us plenty of options at fly half and everyone was impressed with young Dannielle Houghton, who made her league debut at Inside Centre.
Danni showed bravery today, she has power, pace and good hands. Tiyra Slaan and Katie Gilbert could both play flanker or wing, they are that quick, whilst Keisha Hendricks has played virtually everywhere in the pack for us this season - versatility is hugely important in women’s rugby, and we are blessed with some talented players. ”
Irish full back Vicky Irwin maintained her phenomenal scoring run by adding another four tries to her total.
Irwin is easily the league’s top try scorer this term but is full of admiration for her team mates: “I know that I only get presented with scoring opportunities because of all the hard graft the team get through. I’m just happy and delighted to be playing alongside such a talented bunch of girls who work so hard for each other, scoring tries and winning games wouldn’t mean as much without that. ”
Team Manager, Lou Prescott said: “This was a fabulous attacking performance.
“Possibly one of our best of the season. The forwards did an amazing job and I doubt there are any quicker players in any League than Zoe Gabbidon and Charlotte Pearce. ”
