CAMRA's Mike Perkins is on the lookout for more information on local pubs

Due to the introduction of a CAMRA WhatPub information scheme, its branches throughout the UK and locally around here have been compiling a database of pub information. It is hoped that all pubs and some clubs and wine bars will eventually appear on this WhatPub database. It will then be possible to log onto this if one is contemplating a pub visit in a specific area.

It is quite a large task compiling this, as there are possibly around 60,000 pubs in the UK, and keeping it up to date will be large effort too. What we really need is as much information as possible to be fed back to us at CAMRA when a visit is made – we can send you a special form, but details by any other method are acceptable (contact details below).

There are around 130 pubs in our branch area of Southport, Formby and West Lancashire and we don’t have detailed information about many of them. Not just members of the public can do this, but we appeal to licensees to get in touch and let us know their details – postal address, opening times, food available, beers on offer, music, quizzes, phone email and website address, plus any other information.

So licensees, please tell us about any interesting events, especially pub beer festivals, as we shall pass this on to our nearly 600 members and others in the area. Even if you are outside our area no worries, as we shall pass this on to our other branch colleagues. Soon we’ll produce an article about the database and some of the pubs on it.

PUB OF THE YEAR: In the meantime we are pleased to announce that we made an award last week to the Derby Arms, Aughton, as our West Lancashire Pub of the Year – the best in our part of Lancashire. There was stiff competition, as there are many other great Lancashire pubs.
